Why remove the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)?

The DPF of your Alfa is designed to act as a filter for the exhaust gasses in your exhaust system. It is designed to filter out all the particulates from the exhaust that cause the "black smoke" - the soot. In theory what should happen is that as you drive around down it prevents you sooting up the streets when you accelerate. Of course without emptying the filter it would just keep filling up and block the exhaust, so each DPF is designed to go through a process called "regeneration". Regeneration occurs when the car is cruising along at a constant motorway speed for example.

When a DPF regenerates, in simple terms, the engine pumps in extra fuel to heat the gasses and DPF up to such a level that the soot collected burns off and empties itself by the side of the road. Keeps the cities cleaner then pollutes the country side.

Each DPF can only regenerate so many times, then it just stops. When the filter reaches perhaps 40% full the car is in limp home mode and you loose all power. The DPF will need to be replaced. The DPF will fill up quicker if you ONLY do small city based runs as it rarely gets the chance to regenerate.

Options

1) Replace the DPF, at a cost of £1850 + Fitting

2) Remove it all together. A permanent fix

Why do you need a remap after?

Once a DPF is removed and replaced with a bypass pipe (we only use T304 Stainless steel) we need to in effect perform a "lobotomy" on your car and cut the part of the brain out of the computer that performs the regeneration. Once this is gone, that is the end of the problems.

If you just bypass the DPF and do not remap the car after, and by remap we mean the program that makes your car move, run and stop, the ECU will continue to try and regenerate and you will just be pumping in the same rich fuel which will not burn properly and you will be wasting money on expensive fuel AND your car WILL smoke like hell!

Of course there are great power gains to be had by not strangling your engine with a DPF (some examples are listed above) and assuming you don't permanently take advantage of this extra power you will actually save money on fuel too.

Our remapping works on your original Alfa Romeo File from YOUR car, not some generic file. This is important, and preserves any ECU updates your car might of had during services.
